Bin Laden's Earlier Statement, Quoted by UPI from 'Unmat', a pro-Taliban paper"

In a message dated 10/11/01 10:48:07 PM Eastern Daylight Time,
dwalters@xxxxxxx writes:, refering to my assertion that bin Laden had made an
earlier statement that he was not anti-US:

>I didn't see this...which interview did this take place in? To this day, bin

First, the issue is not whether he took credit. What the US government
needed, and which bL handily supplied, was AN EMOTIONAL ASSAULT ON THE
AMERICAN PEOPLE. That was the key. He had to insult, to goad, to taunt.
The point was to emotionally justify aggression. That's what he so handily
did.

As for the source of the earlier bin laden statement, it is the same as for
the later one: the Western media. Of course, it is possible that one or the
other or both have been tampererd with. I supplied one of the several
sources that I have found - the UPI - in "BIN LADEN, TERRORIST MONSTER, TAKE
TWO!" For the second time, Mr. Walters would benefit by reading the things
with which he claims to disagree...

Here is the bin laden quote, from UPI. It is also available from other
sources. (Quote taken from "OSAMA BIN LADEN,TERROIST MONSTER, TAKE TWO!" (I
posted the article on the 9th on this list; I just reposted it)

BEGIN EXCERPT

Bin Laden was interviewed September 28th by a pro-Taliban newspaper. Here's a
summary:

"In an interview with 'Ummat' -- a publication sympathetic to Afghanistan's
ruling Taliban -- bin Laden said both he and al Qaida had 'nothing to do with
the terrorist attacks in America' and that 'hard-line Jewish organizations
might be involvedâ'

"Ummat said it sent questions to bin Laden through Taliban officials, and
received written responses. Bin Laden reportedly said in his replies that
dozens of terrorists organizations from countries like Israel, Russia, India
and Serbia could be responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and
Pentagon that left over 6,000 people dead or missing.

He also insisted that al Qaida does not consider the United States its
enemyâ" ('United Press International,' 28 September 28, 2001, Friday)
