I wish I could see the same dialectic at work here, Charles.  I am inclined
to think that if things get really serious and massive sacrifice is
expected from the working class then indeed Labor will get govt.

class to make such sacrifices , Gary ?

I wonder, though, if in the longer run, the simultaneity of war and depression 
might have potential for turning into their opposites, revolution, something 
the American ruling class has wanted to avoid. Crisis is danger and opportunity.
