RE: Joschka Fischer

Jim Farmelant writes:

I have read the New Republic article.  According to Berman a major
turning point in the political development of these popeoplespecially
Cohen-Bendit, Glucksmann, Fischer etc. was their horror over the
PLO's terrorism in the 1970s (i.e. the killing of the Israeli athletes
in Munich in 1972), which it is said help lead to their disenchantment
with revolutionary politics.  One might then think that these folk
would be equally horrified by Israeli state terrorism.

Perhaps German liberals are more susceptible to the rhetorical equation
of anti-Zionism and anti-semitism that the Israel lobby routinely
peddles. Then there are the efforts of Schröder and Fischer to expand
the projection of German political power whilst appearing to be "good
boys" for the US (e.g., Horst Köhler's appointment at the IMF, and
German involvement in the former Yugoslavia). It's possible that Israeli
state terrorism does horrify them. But public German criticism is
unlikely, for obvious reasons, while the indiscriminate bombing of
Yugoslavia hardly qualifies these guys as legitimate critics.
