Jorge Amado
[ html stripped ]
Dear Comrades -
on monday, four days left to his 89th birthday, Jorge Amado died in Salvador
de Bahia. The world has lost an outstanding author, and the latin-american
poor a splendid portraitist of their conditions.
Member of the Brazilian CP, he was subjected to prosecution; in his "Notes
for an autobiography which I never will write" he describes his thoughts in
the fifties, his doubts about the political orientation proposed (or
enforced) in Moscow to the "fellow" parties.
Up to his last days he defended the historicl gains of Red Octobre: "The
values proclaimed by the October Revolution will stay, independently from
the present setbacks".
One of his quotes seems to me quite moving:
"I say No, when all others unanimously say Yes".
Kurt, Vienna
