Re: Marx and Marxist epistemology

A useful reference work is *A Dictionary of Marxist Thought* which was
edited
by Tom Bottomore and published by Basil Blackwell. BTW many of the
philosophy
articles in that work were written by Roy Bhasker but those articles are
quite lucid
whereas many of his books tend to be quite impenetrable. An important
work
on historical materialism is G.A. Cohen's *Karl Marx's Theory of History:
A Defence*
which was published by Oxford University Press.

I find it interesting that in your class Marxism is classified as being
a form of rationalist
epistemology, since I think that Marx was attempting to transcend the
division
in Western philosophy between rationalism and empiricism. BTW Cohen's
book
on historical materialism was written from the perspective of an
analytically-trained
philosopher who is aligned with logical empiricism.
