students and the university
Carol Cox made some interesting points about radicalism and our relation to
students, which are mediated by both the labor market and the university.
students are not only oppressed by their professors and the university they
attend. they are also oppressed by family obligations and the need to make a
living. they are only engaged in a limited sense in a radical dialogue with
their teachers. this is the contradiction we are faced with as teachers. if I
tried to organize study groups on Capital as Louis suggested, no one would come.
this might work at Columbia. my students work 40 hours at deadend jobs. my words
fall like bats. still, we continue. George
