Forwarded from Anthony (state of the US left)

Hi Lou: In your reply to my note in the "moderator?s note" food fight, you
talked about other lists out there - reminding me of something I have
wanted to suggest to you and others on this list for a long time. Hence the
note below. (Also thank you for the kind words.)

Please post this,

A suggestion for a discussion on this list.

"What is the left in the USA and on the internet?"

>From where I sit, it is pretty hard to judge, but it is obvious that many
of you on this list know a great deal about the subject. In the recent food
fight over the "moderator?s note" various people including Yoshie, Mine,
and Lou, wrote asides that described aspects of the left that now exists in
the USA and on the net.

Lou and others here have discussed in general terms the march to the right
by the left worldwide which accompanied the collapse of the Soviet Union.
And you allude to different aspects of what is going on in the "actually
existing left" (I really hate the term actually existing). But a whole
picture of what is out there, how big it is, how it is organized, etc. has
not emerged.

My impression is that the left has grown, and the new left that is emerging
is significantly different than the old left. It is more anarchist - less
marxist, more green - less red.

It is also connected through the internet more than through print media, etc.

What I would like to see here is a description of what exists and where it
is going. That would certainly help me understand some of the nuances of
the serious debates, and maybe even of the food fights.

Happy Winter Solstice, Anthony
