Merton's anomie theory of deviance looks to me so much like
David Bonger's Marxist-inspired criminology, that I have always
wondered about whether or not he may been influenced by
him or by other Marxist writers. BTW some of Merton's earliest
papers on the sociology of science were published in the
Marxist journal Science & Society.

I am sure theat Lou Paulsen is well aware that many
survey studies have documented over the years that
sociology students in the US and Europe tended to
be among the most inclined towards leftist political
activism.
