knee-jerk anti-pessimism (Weber,etc.)
I find the recent derisive references to "pessimists"
and "pessimism" rather worrisome, as they seem to
mirror the happy-face requirements of capitalism's own
promotional (commercial) culture. We should beware
the making of (unwarranted?) optimism a sectarian
norm, and we should also take care not to purchase
our optimism too cheaply. Frankfurters, neo-Luddites,
etc, may not be much fun at a party, but surely we
have enough cheerleaders already.
