Re: on the American election - a query and a comment

It seems to me the most significant impact on the election results were
Nader's votes. What we have as a result is a virtual 50-50 deadlock. The
impact of this is that a new policy agenda can become influential. For
example, if the Greens can elect just a few House members in the next
election, they become a partner in something that has never happened in US
national politics-a coalition government.
There must be no mistake that the current division between the Dems and
the Republicans represents an excellent opportunity for maximizing the
impact of the Green agenda. When they coalesce we get war in Serbia, welfare
reform, deregulation, WTO running rampant. When they are at each other's
throats, there becomes greater freedom for the people's movements opposing
mass incarcerations, stopping police murders, improving the quality of
health care and education.
It remains to be seen if people are willing to take advantage of this
division and unify behind the Green Party to maximize it's political impact.
Failing to do so will impact on the agenda for years to come. Swing the door
open, and walk on in; or stand on the outside and prophesy the end.
