Yeah, but the with the election the Democrats stand to lose the whole
barnyard. The House of Representatives, after being Democrat-dominated
therough the Reagan and Bush years, went Republican in and stayed that
way over the latter half of the 90s and the Republicans have managed to
narrowly hold on to that majority there. The Senate, also a long-time
Democratic bastion, passed into the hands of a narrow Republican
majority. If Bush is given the presidency, the Democrats would in one
blow go from being on top, to being on the bottom and facing a
government entirely controlled by their opponents and the possible,
indeed probable, undoing of all the programs and policies they have put
in place over the last 8 years, and perhaps even going back to the New
Deal. That is why they are fighting so hard. Knowing themselves unable
to outvote the Republicans in Congress, they are grabbing desperately
for presidential veto power.
