I had really not expected it to go this far. I didn't believe the ruling
class was this polarized between Bush and Gore. But maybe they are. Or
maybe they weren't on election day, but have gotten carried away by events.

Of course if Gore can't find 900 votes somewhere this is all moot, and I
still mostly really believe that the ruling class will keep the conflict
within limits. But I wouldn't bet my life on it now.

CB: My take on this is pretty much like Lou P's. I'm not sure what type of
dialectic
it is , but it seems that it is the eveness of the balance between the forces
behind
Bush and Gore that is keeping things on edge and preventing resolution. The
election
itself was a virtual tie, including the Congressional elections. Also, the U.S.
ruling class has plenty of slack to play with because of the relative
extremeness of
its international hegemony compared to during the Cold War. It can tolerate this
crisis because in general its situation is so stable.
