Not at all. Spanish democracy had, in the end, little to do with the ideals
those
martyrs had struggled for. Franco left behind him a vocally progressive petty
bourgeoisie which was in fact the perfect continuation of the main aspects of
his
regime (this is the petty bourgeoisie that supported Gonzalez and now supports
Aznar), the social revolution in the countryside unfinished, and a smart new
King
who knew how to manage in order to reincorporate Spain, as a new imperialist
country, into Europe. Today's Spain, living off the blood they suck from Latin
America (particularly, but not at all exclusively) Argentina, and of tourism for
Northern Europeans (who flock for some Sun to a banalized and menaced
environment in
Spanish beaches while lower class Spanish youth dream of getting a couple of
German
or Swedish origin and higher class Spahish rush away from the beer-can littered,
prostituted coast to the Northern beaches on the Cantabrian Gulf), as well as
transforming itself into the frontiers guard for Europe against Africa (and
Latin
America if possible), this ugly and perverted Spain is the direct continuity of
Franco's regime.

Liberties have been allowed to the mass of Spanish petty bourgeois, but these
liberties are the liberties of the pimp who rules a brothel. This has nothing
to do
with agrarian reform, Republic and socialized production. We must admit honestly
that none of the _substantive_ ideals of the Republic has come to fulfillment in
today's Spain, and that the intellectual layers that Saura gave so good an
expression of are, sad to say, gleefully comfortable with this "renewed" Spain
of
Juan Carlos and his Fascist Queen.
