Re: Civilizing the barbarian
Captain John Smith, the Virginia leader, was a poor man who made his reputation
fighting the Turks in Hungary.
Smith was the son of a Yoeman. He found farm life dull. After parents died,
the took his chances on continent. He was an excellent athlete. He had no
formal education, but he was widely read, especially in military tactics. In
Hungary, while fighting the Turks, he informed his commander of a new
signalling device that helped to win the battle. He earned himself title of
"Captain." He also decapitated 3 Turks in hand-to-hand combat. Later he was
captured by the Turks and sold into slavery. He escaped by murdering his
master and riding across Russian steppes, then sailing off the coast of
Africa. He finally returned to England in 1604.
