Abolishing the electoral college would be a good first step.
Eugene Debs' Socialist Party as I recall was advocating that
over a century ago. What is really needed though is the
abolition of the current wiiner-take-all electoral system
which effectively locks into place the existing two-party
(really one party with two wings) system. If that can be
accomplished, there would be room within the electoral
system for parties like a labor party or the Greens.
