Left Parties and Indians
Comrades:
I would appreciate suggestions on where to look for any historical treatment
on the relationship of American Indians to the US left. This could have
several dimensions. One would be any exploration on how national left
parties (CP, SWP, Progressive, Populist, etc.) dealt with Indian issues
particularly when these issues had much less visibility than they do now.
Another line of exploration would be how some successful left groupings (the
Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota, the Progressive Party in Wisconsin, the
Non-Partisan League in North Dakota) analyzed and dealt with Indian concerns
given the comparatively large Indian populations in those states..
I have read Marxism and Native Americans, edited by Ward Churchill. While
useful, particularly in exposing the obtuseness of much of the left on this
question, the book doesn't deal with any of the particular ways that the
organized left grappled (or didn't) on this important issue. Thanks for any
help.
