Hi Mine,

I think that a key factor was also the collapse of 'communism'. There is
no way that South Korea for instance would have been allowed to spin into
crisis while there was a viable communist alternative. The irony is that
1989 spelled disaster for the anti-communist thugs promoted by the
Americans. They were quite simply no longer necessary. I tend to think
that this was more important than the so-called independence of characters
like Suharto in Indonesia.
