EDITORIAL NOTES
Contemporary class struggles and the National Democratic Revolution
This issue of the African Communist reflects some of the progressive, left-wing
ideological ferment that is once more in evidence here in South Africa, and
indeed
internationally. The decade of the 1990s began dismally for left-wing forces *
the
collapse of the Berlin Wall being the most dramatic symbol of a major
world-historical
set-back.

But the crisis and collapse of the former Soviet bloc was just one
manifestation of
the crisis of the left at that time. In Africa and through much of the Third
World,
the radical national democratic project had seemingly lost its way under the
impact of
structural adjustment programmes, internal bureaucratisation, and other
weaknesses. By
the beginning of the last decade this stagnation was already evident in a
country like
Zimbabwe. The sequel is playing itself out in our neighbouring country at
present, and
Patrick Bond contributes an interesting perspective in this issue on the
complicated
challenges facing the left in that country.
