MELBOURNE -- The scene is now set for one of the most dramatic political
confrontations between capital and the people in a decade. Protest
organisers have spent the day erecting the tents and stages from which
they'll coordinate the blockade of World Economic Forum summit while
police have built barricades of their own, fortifying the Crown Towers
conference site.

Wave of defiance rolls on

MELBOURNE -- "What's happening here is part of a rolling wave of global
protest, that has gone from Seattle to Washington to Chiangmai to
Melbourne tomorrow and to Prague in a few weeks for the meetings of IMF
and World Bank," Filipino activist and academic Walden Bello told the
500
people gathered for a public meeting in the Regent Theatre here, to
rousing cheers. "This wave has shaken the system of corporate
globalisation to its core."

kicked off a week of protests here against the World Economic Forum,
allowing activists to stretch their legs, orient themselves and warm up
their vocal chords.
