Re: [CrashList] on Chomsky

I havn't got itme for a long polemic against this bizzarre(sp?) attack on
Chomsky, but lets see.
First mistake made by someone or other was "its' difficult to mobilize an
antiwar movement for someone your calling a criminal" or something like
that.
Why's that then? I think most people would call Saddam Hussein a criminal
whilst still being against the Gulf War, further as an anti-war protestor I
would be fairly indifferent to the leaders involved, they don't particularly
interest me and in fact if a US assasin killed Milosevic i probably wouldn't
waste much time shouting about it. If you see a war where the US and co. are
bombing another nation, I protest because its'likely that with all that
heavy ordinance being thrown about someone's going to get hurt.
Anyway back to Chomsky, are you accusing Chomsky of stifling the anti-war
movement? is that what you reaslly are doing?
This amazes me because I thought I'd read a few books by him where he
condemns practically every skirmish that evr occured as the fault of US
hegemony and definitely a bad thing, but maybe I'm wrong, maybe someone else
wrote "Year 501" or "New mandarins" or "Fateful Triangle" (well known for
it's defense of the military option) maybe they were in my imagination. As
for the Serb thing, he clearly isn't anti-Serb and Milosevic is
resoponisible for criminal activites as you well know. I have to admit to
not reading "The new military Humanism" (or whatever its called) but i do
remember reading an article in "dessent" (an odius puplication) which
ironical accused Chomsky of precisley the opposite crime of that which he is
being accused of in this list ie an appologist for Serbia.
It is clear that I am an ardent Chomsky apologist but since no-one seemed to
be defending him on the list I thought I should chuck my no doubt ignorant
views into this debate. It is a pity that the left while so quick to embrace
the most strange allies (like Milosevic) is quick to denounce people like
Chomsky who are so clearly on our side.

Yours Jon

p.s you said that Chomsky said that he was amazed by the venom of the press
against Milosevic. This surprises me since surely you and Chomsky can't fail
to notice that as far as Eastern European foreigners are concerned the press
on both sides of the atlantic turn out a constant stream of abuse and lies
as and when required. In fact I would have expected nothing less then the
official enemy to be dubbed a mass-murdering, child rapist thug.

pps I apologise for the atrocious spelling
