Fiji (to Lou Paulsen)

Given that I am totally opposed to NZ and Australian sanctions on Fiji, I
don't know why you bother to say silly things like this.

As for your putting the blame on the Indo-Fijians for not joining the
Qarase government, why on earth should the FLP join a government that has
no democratic mandate from anyone and is the result of a right-wing coup?
Should Allende have joined the Pinochet regime if invited, all in the name
of "national reconciliation and stability", of course?

You seem to be rather in favour of "national reconciliation and stability",
but this is a meaningless term when those offering it are only in office
through a coup.

Moreover, the Fijian Army, which put Qarase in power, is the creation - and
creature - of imperialism. In fact, it is imperialism's most reliable
institution within Fiji. It has long been the guarantor for the
anti-democratic political set-up and discrimination against the
Indo-Fijians. So, if anyone has lost their class bearings, it seems to be
you given your apparent support for Qarase.

There is presently no evidence that the imperialists want to strangle the
Qarase regime or the army which stands behind it. There aren't a lot of
imperialists calling for the reinstatement of the Chaudry regime. And the
imperialists have never shown an interest in equal rights for Indo-Fijians.

Moreover, after the Rabuka coups of 1987, the imperialists never moved to
restore the democratically elected government either. They huffed and
puffed a bit for show, but Rabuka was basically their man.
