Danger of coup in Venezuela.
Presidential elections take place Sunday in venezuela,
and the press in Colombia is speculating that they
will be followed by a military coup d'etat. Television
and newspapers here in Bogota have all carried the
speculation, but the most important source of the
rumours is the heavily connected magazine Cambio
(Garcia Marquez is the founder) whose lead article
poses the question. The article cites opinoiin polls
in which the voters of Venezuela favro Hugo Chaves by
50 something percent to 30 something percent for
Francisco Arias, but the military cadets favor Arias
by 50% to only 20 % for Chaves. Arias was a close
comrade of Chaves who is now the leading opposition
figure. Both are military leaders.
Anthony.
