My thesis is not that fascism was better at "imagination, inspiration, and

human heart it would not have enjoyed even limited success. In 1919 there
was not a single fascist anywhere in the world; twenty years later fascism
came within a hair's breath of taking over the planet. Rather than ponder
"why did fascism lose then? " I prefer to go in the opposite direction. How
could it capture such massive support, and not just in Germany and Italy? i
don't buy the line that it was merely the support of the big bourgeosie
that fueled fascism; we must look for deeper explanations that take us into
the realm of psychology an even(gasp) metaphysics.
Apropos story: when De gaulle visited the ruins of Stalingrad in 1944 he
shouted out " What a people! What a people!" one of the French reporters
present said, "ah, oui, les Russes', but de Gaulle replied "No, not the
Russians. The Germans. To have come so far!

socialism failed. But fascism and Nazism failed. Socialism succeeded better
than fascism. Why is fascism a better example than socialism with respect
to imagination and inspiration and beauty ?
