It is a Portuguese word that has entered Argentinian (and River
Plate) rural language. Originally it is facão, meaning "large knife".
It became the basic knife of the _gaucho_, particularly useful for
dealing with cattle and meat. It was used in a special kind of duel,
the "duelo criollo", a practice that in the Argentina of the later
decades of the 19th. Century was quite mixed with politics. Sometimes
you had to win an election "a punta de facón", that is by the point
of the large knife!
