Why I am a Nietzchean(and Marxian too): FN understood alienation and
reification in a more profound and prophetic sense than Marx did. He was
not, conra popular belief, a nihilist; rather he argued that existing (read
capitalist) society had created beings with no reason to live except the
pursuit of the material. He predicted that the "dissolution of identity"
(and for that matter, identity politics)would supersede
class-consciousness, which, alas, has proven true in the advanced
capitalist countries. I reject the attempt by the right of capture FN for
itself. We on the left need him as a lamp to guide us through the cultural
contradictions of late capitalism, IE the McDonalization of the planet.
