Earliest reference I've seen is to John Watkins Chapman who apparently
used term postmodern to describe avant-garde painting in 1870s (cited
by Dick Higgins, _A Dialectic of Centuries_), I did read somewhere
that Olson was first US poet to describe his work as postmodern...

Now that I've set record straight (place infernal smiley mark here)...

btw: re. NLR, my problem years ago was that they continued to charge my
credit card after I allowed sub to lapse so you might want to check
statements for awhile if you paid that way, sounding different note, I've
always had reading problem with NLR small print & crowded page layout...
