OK, in whose interest is it to have a giant, paranoiac secret police crush
dissent, shoot dissidents and mandate the worship of a para-feudal
dynasty, while the people survive on tree bark? Socialism is about
socializing the means of production and letting the state wither away. In
North Korea, the state monopolizes the means of production and seems
intent on letting the people wither away. If the NKCP was serious about
liberating the proletariat, they'd be studying what Cuba and Vietnam are
doing, and employing similar strategies to deepen and entrench the
revolution, arming it for a long guerilla struggle against neoliberalism,
deep in the jungles of information capitalism.
Not every revolutionary process automatically succeeds. Some degenerate
into systems little better than the ones they were supposed to replace,
and the Left must ask why this happens and how to avoid it in the
future.
