I don't know Nestor. I hope you're right.
The problem is that this Elian case has already gone too far and too
profoundly. The smile of that kid on his father's arms can destroy 40 years
of US-Cuba relations.
If the US is to hand him over now promptly, people will start asking
questions. Where does this kid lives? What's so wrong with Cuba anyway? Why
this blockade? Aren't we friends with Vietnam now and giving our blessings
to China's entry in the WTO? Gee, these Miami folks are real assholes,
aren't they? What jerks! Are these people dictating our foreign policy
towards a neighboring country?
The prompt handover of Elian would bring a political dynamic of détente
(unless it is done very, very discretely, but I can't see how). It would be
a devastating defeat for the Miami mob. They would never get on their feet
again.
I'm not sure if this US presidency is ready for this. This time we're not
dealing with 3rd rate Miami gangsters. (The imperialists have just slapped
them in the face as a bunch of good-for-nothing losers and incompetents)
This time we're dealing with the beast itself. Moloch. And they still got
the boy.
This awesome weight rests now entirely on Juan Miguel's shoulders. He's our
man down there. I hope he can make it.
