Response: This is precisely what I was trying to get at with my posts--about
ultra-reductionist, narrow, myopic and "special interest" or single-issue
movements that do not deal with their own pet issues within a general
context involving the totality of capitalism and the myriad and
interconnected crises and forms of oppression that his system generates.
I have seen all sorts of gay activists who express not one ounce of concern
about anything other than gay issues; yet I have never seen a true Marxist
not aware or concerned about forms of oppression of gays. I have seen all
sorts of "Greens" who care about any life form other than human and express
absolutely no concern about forms of oppression of various groups of humans,
Indigenous rights etc, and yet I have never seen a true Marxist impervious
to the wholsale destructions of environments and species that capitalism
inexorably generates. I have seen all sorts of "feminists" who show no
concern about any issues not involving women--middle-class and white women
specifically, directly and narrowly-- such as imperialism, poor women, poor
men etc and yet I have never seen any true Marxist impervious to the forms
and levels of oppression of women in ways, forms and levels that males do
not suffer. I have seen all sorts of "Indigenous activists" so concerned
about Indian issues exclusively yet impervious to struggles of workers,
women or peoples of "Third World" nations, yet I have never seen any true
Marxist that simply and summarily dismisses Indigenous struggles as minor or
not as part of a wider totality of capitalism and its forms and levels of
exploitation.
BTW, in case it was not clear, defense of Makah "Treaty rights" and the
inviolability of treaties (the IWC Convention is a ratified Treaty binding
all signatories) and the right of the Makah to conduct whaling
paradoxically--or dialectically--actually defends the whale populations
against the industrial whaling powers (bound by their own Treaties to which
they are signatories) rather than providing a "slippery slope" for the
justification of and return to industrial whaling. If the Makah choose to
become signatories to the IWC Convention then it is their sovereign right to
do so but the Makah can no more act as an agent/signatory for the Blackfoot
than the U.S. government can act as an agent/signatory for the Makah. That
is the real issue along with the significance of whales to Makah culture and
traditions. Those who summarily dismiss the Treaty and Makah
sovereignty/survival issues with their own special-interest/niche invective
about how cute whales are were/are the object of my own invective.
There will be a prgram about Makah and Blackfoot issues on KBOO Portland at
!:30 to 3:00 pm Pacific time accessible on www.kboo.org

What the Green party is guilty of is not understanding human rights issues.
I have tried to get through to the Sacramento Greens about this and have not
been understood yet. Ralph Nader had a lousy position on human rights and
racism. He refused to get involved in what he called "genital politics".
As
a bisexual activist I told the local Greens that it was very offensive. His
position borders on Rush Limbaugh's position of calling "feminazism ...
merely way for unattractive women to participate in society". (This from a
very unattractive man.) Nadir and his supporters don't get how fundamental
racism and national oppression is to American capitalism. His positions
offends people of color. How blind to not see that women's issues are about
fundamental issues such as not being killed at work (by a coworker with a
hammer who resents a woman doing a man's job.) The differential in woman's
rights and pay is a large supporting block of all capitalism. The U. S.
powers that be MUST oppress gay people as women loving women and men playing
a feminine role gives too much respect to women.
