George should probably read the first section of Volume II of
Capital, which I tend to think of as Marx's most extraordinary
achievement. But in response to the question posed above, two
points: 1) It of course doesn't affect Marx's conclusions at all,
but 2) sometimes nutty questions about or challenges to Marx
can give rise to actually interesting questions. This particular
nutty question has led to some interesting exchanges over on
PEN-L. At this point, I'm not sure whether the question of how
labor power gets produced -- for example, inquiring into the
social relations embodied in the school system -- is a fruitful or
merely an academic question, but it is a question which George's
nuttiness raises if one follows up on it.
