They that all great empires are completely paranoid, and with good reason.
At the height of power is the greatest weakness, standing on the tip of a
mountain leaves you a long, painful fall. With the level of McCarthyism that
is rearing it's head, one would think that the country is infested with
communists about to overthrow democracy or something (oh, to dream the good
dream!).
I think folks might want to take another look at this kind of scapegoating
that has an erie ring to it: From Wen Ho lee to Mariano Faget, there is a
line up of people inside the system itself being purged for their alleged
ties to "communist conspiracies"... the last time this happened, the left
was decimated up until today. This time, we don't have much further we can
get pushed back.
