In the world of advanced technology, this is a use-value we (and the
whales) can afford to do without.

As far as morality is concerned: in an evolutionary sense, we're way past
what the whales (that abusive term for what's really a complex set of
species) have achieved, in terms of tool-using intelligence. Chances are
there are plenty of species in this fine galaxy of ours which are as
advanced compared to us as we are to plankton. If they decide to bulldoze
the solar system for a new interstellar highway which will increase
galactic GDP, is that OK or isn't it?
