As former Situationist and socialist art historian T. J. (Tim ) Clark
writes in his book on Courbet (_Image of the People: Gustave Courbet
and the 1848 Revolution_): "bourgeois society is efficient in making
all art its own" (p. 6) and the "avant-garde...[is] an unabashed form
