The commodification of the avant-garde

Title: The commodification of the avant-garde
Greetings Comrades,
That was a nice and insightful summary of some of the contemporary work of
Clemente, and some persons of his circle, Haring, Basquiat, by Louis.  I was
just looking at some book in the bookstore about contemporary British artists.
 The
sectioned cow I saw in that book, and other images are rather similar in vein to
the point of Louis,
Louis,
"Clemente's work is a rather solipsistic affair that shows a naked man swimming
in--you guessed it--seminal fluid. So as I passed by painting after painting in
a similar vein, I felt challenged to understand how the Museum decided to link
the artist with the political rebellions..."
Doyle
Which is something important to me.  Pop art has a kind of social tinge to it of
broadly being "peoples" interest, but as Louis titles his essay, commodification
of the avant-garde, the general drift of that trend has been to focus upon the
marketing of commodities, and the downward trend upon the quality of thought
that involves.
One way I suppose we can move against that sort of thing is take Louis' recently
expressed aim seriously here on the list and try to contribute to the building
up of the quality of thought here.  That is something we all can do in the
limits of our resources to support and grow something against the capitalist
trends we see in their culture.
thanks,
Doyle Saylor
