A lot of this stuff is rooted in flame wars from over 5 years ago. Most
normal people move on, but Gerry Levy has not been able to. After I joined
PEN-L, a complete year went by with him making unfounded attacks on me, to
which I did not respond. Eventually Michael Perlman unsubbed him. The only
mailing list where Levy is tolerated nowadays--besides his own, which is
actually run at a very high level--is thaxis apparently. And whatever list
he is on except his own, the only subject he wants to discuss is my sins.
None of it is true. The only thing I admit to is being a blunt, outspoken
defender of Marxism who likes to let the chips fall where they may. What
some people find particularly reprehensible about me is that I am
disrespectful to big name academic Marxists. After I wrote an stinging
critique of him on PEN-L, all of his graduate students started passing it
around to their delight. People with aspirations to academic respectablity
just hate it when I do this sort of thing, which just encourages me. As
soon as I am finished with a couple of book projects I am working on, I
will sit down and write "Academic Marxism", which will be utterly devastating.
