Thanks, Patrick. I thought this was more or less the case.

I was just finishing school when 'Rhodesia' became Zimbabwe. Supporting
the change was one of the first political positions I ever took. It was
necessary, because the anglophone white settlers here are pretty much
interchangeable with the anglophone white settlers in Zimbabwe, and they
knew it, and were full of shit like "the blacks in Rhodesia and South
Africa are so much better off than the blacks in the rest of Africa, and if
Mugabe gets in they'll be much worse off" and so on.

This means that any setbacks and defeats in Zimbabwe are fuel for reaction
here. It's a pretty minor effect, but it feeds the worst and most backward
sectors of Australian society and politics.
