East Timor Education and Humanitarian Aid Speaking Tour
Grassroots International and the East Timor Action Network are
co-sponsoring a national speaking tour from November 7/8 - November 23,
1999.
The Speakers:
Pamela Sexton is currently traveling in East and West Timor, where she is
assessing the situation for Grassroots International?s Act Now for East
Timor Campaign and for Timor Aid. Pamela is a long-time
activist with the San Francisco chapter of the East Timor Action Network
(ETAN).
Last April, Pam was part of the exploratory team sent by Peace Brigades
International to lay the groundwork for its project in East Timor. After
her return to the United States, Pam worked as the US coordinator for the
International Federation for East Timor Observer Project (IFET-OP), the
largest United Nations-accredited, international observer mission for the
recent referendum in East Timor. Prior to her activist work on East Timor,
Pam lived and taught in Indonesia for two years.
If immigration issues can be resolved on short notice, Pamela will be
joined on the tour by an East Timorese activist.
The Tour:
The tour is planned for the period November 7-23 and, while not final, our
idea is to begin on the EastCoast and move westward to end in California.
The speakers will be available for public events, press outreach and
advocacy meetings. The tour is designed to raise awareness about the
current and on-going humanitarian crisis in East Timor as well as the
critical situation faced by East Timorese refugees who have been forced
into refugee camps in West Timor and other Indonesian provinces. The tour
will also let people know of the efforts of Grassroots International and
Timor Aid to channel aid to the local groups now struggling to regroup in
East Timor.
As always, the success of this tour will depend on the support of local
activists organizing public events and to provide local odging, transport,
etc. to tour participants. Time is short, so If you or your organization
is interested in hosting the tour, please contact Jennifer
Moorehead with Grassroots International by October 28.
Thank you!
