"Pathognomonic" is a symptom of a disease whose presence offers a
definitive diagnosis; if someone exhibits symptom X, you can be sure s/he
has disease Y. For example, it's often said that repeated early morning
insomnia is pathognomonic of depression. Belief in death agonies is
pathognonomic of Trotskyism.
