Why the destructive welcome?

Just one thing, Philip. It can help to be very selective and use the delete
key more rather than less. Check out the contributors, topics and tone you
want and zap the others.
There's a lot of very strong political feeling behind much of the posting
here, and it sometimes expresses itself in terms of aggressively
personalized malevolence.
There are fundamental disagreements among subscribers regarding the most
important events of this century and the policies responsible for them.
People with the same disagreements have been killed for it in real life
(I'm thinking of the Stalinist slaughter of Trotskyists in, say, the Soviet
Union and in Vietnam at the end of the Second World War).
I think it's a mistake to let the feeling obscure the policies, but it's a
natural enough state of affairs given the confusion as to the policies
needed and the social-historical reasons why they're needed.
Cheers,
Hugh
