Hugh, you may just have found your metier. Stick to being a humor critic,
and let the rest of us talk about serious matters.

Cops are ignorant and often violent. They are, like most people, sufferers
>from false consciousness. Often without understanding why what they're
doing is wrong, they violently uphold the bourgeois state (and once in a
blue moon, help make sure that no more than 15 or so of us will get eaten
by Jeffrey Dahmer). On the other hand, it's quite clear that psychologists
and psychiatrists were, from the '50's through the '70's, mostly purveyors
of false consciousness, who not only tried to turn those who rebelled into
good, submissive ("well-adjusted") citizens, but had them locked up for
schizophrenia and other disorders when their efforts failed. They were
among the state's elite counterrevolutionary forces. They served a similar
role in the Soviet Union, as you may be aware. But things are different
now, right? It's not so clear to me. Twelve-step groups, Ritalin, and TQM
do more to uphold the bourgeois state in the US than cops swinging
flashlights.

Pip-pip and all that,

Rahul
