As were Roosevelt, Churchill, and virtually every major politician in
western Europe and America.    This,  in itself, explains nothing.   I am
much more concerned with analyzing those societies that produced and
nurtured these attitudes.    And even if you are prone to reduce it to
merely condemning "Stalinism",  you are still left with the inconvenient
fact that this pheonomenon, too,  is essentially political and not
explicable in terms of individual eccentricity.
