Re: Jewry under Bolshevism
I like Louis G's delicacy of phrasing:
>
>> The anti-Semitic frenzy of the last five years of
>>the Stalin era, culminating in the openly anti-Semitic nuances of the
>>Doctors' Plot affair, can no doubt be explained as an aggravation of earlier
>>Soviet attitudes.
*nuances* !!!
This I think surpasses The Economist for mealy-mouthed, hypocritical cynicism.
Rahul, always quick to home in on a weakness, remarks:
>Are you actually admitting that Stalin ever did anything wrong?
I think it depends on what Louis means by 'explanation' -- I think he means
'explained away' or 'excused'. On what he means by 'aggravation', and the
social and political mechanisms behind it. And on what he means by 'earlier
Soviet attitudes' -- *whose* attitudes, *how much* earlier, how dependent
on even earlier Tsarist attitudes like those manifested in the pogroms and
Black Hundreds?
And how come it survived though the main Jewish scapegoat for the problems
of the Stalinist bureaucracy had been struck dead in 1940 with an ice-pick
through his skull?
Cheers,
Hugh
