I'm not really sure what you're asking, but the discussion that you are
seeking (and the one that influenced Marx) is found in *Ancient Society* by
Lewis Henry Morgan.
In addition, Marx set out to synthesize Morgan's ideas and his own
materialism in a volume which he failed to complete prior to his death.
Engles completed it: *The Origin of the Family, Private Property,and the
State*.
