Labour aristocracy ?
Hmm .... I really don't think that the average worker in the US is
driving a new car every three years. Even if they were, the problem is badly
put. A lot of places in the US (I visited memphis and Nashville) have no public
transport to speak of of. Trains don't go there, so you kindof have to have a
car.
Now I'm not saying that things don't need to be reorganized. I am saying
that a drop in the standard of living of masses of workers is not a necessary
part or a desirable part of a socialist transformation. Let's produce more, more
intelligently, more relaxedly....
I also think that we have to be careful not to internalize the
patronising or worse attitudes of the mass media towards workers. The idea that
workers are most interested inmaterial wealth is very frequently untrue, and you
onlyhave to look at the number of people involved in voluntary organizations of
all sorts, doing intelligent or dumb but not selfish things.
