It *is* central. No, there is no society that I would "label
as socialist" now.

Why? Because nowhere is the working class in power (controls
the state - or rather has smashed the old state and built it's
own). Actually I think there was only one succesful
workers' revolution - Russia from October 1917 and the next
very few and short years. With all it's faults this is the
closest we have been.

There have been other places where workers for a short period
(days, weeks, months) or in a limited area has had power - like
the Paris Commune 1871, parts of Hungary in 1919, parts of Spain
1936-7 etc. These were inspiring attempts - but were eventually
smashed in blood.
