Weekly Standard

I seem to recall, late last August, a certain buzz in the world of print
journalism around Rupert Murdoch's new political newspaper, the Weekly
Standard. The name seemed fitting enough for those who were actually
going to buy the thing--part of the new conservatism of the Hilton Kramer
brand, you know, bemoaning the fact that "multiculturalists" are teaching
that black and women are people, stuff like that.
Anyway, I had been happy being more or less ignorant of the damn thing until
this morning when, upon opening my mailbox, I discovered a snazzy four color
advertisement announcing FINALLY, A BOLD NEW WEEKLY CONSERVATIVE MAGAZINE
>FROM WASHINGTON FOR EVERYONE WHO'S SERIOUS ABOUT THWARTING THE MAINSTREAM
LIBERAL PRESS AND GETTING THE TRUTH OUT! Inside was a postage paid reply
card attached to a brief resume (with full color portraits) of each of the
worthies associated with this new venture:
There's Bill Kristol as editor and publisher.
Former Chief of Staff to William Bennett and Washington insider, Bill led
the successful campaign to defeat Hillary's health care plan in 1994.
Fred Barnes as executive editor. One of the best known journalists in
America, Fred was chief political correspondent for the NEW REPUBLIC and
appears weekly on "The McLaughlin Group".
John Podheretz as deputy editor. Plus best-selling humorist P.J.
O'Rourke, Pulitzer prize winning columnist Charles Krauthammer, David
Brooks, former editorial features editor of the Wall Street Journal, former
Bush speechwriter, Andrew Ferguson, and many more. In other words, a good
half-dozen of the MOST VILE SCUMBAGS WHO EVER BEFOULED THE PROFESSION OF
JOURNALISM (my emphasis).
As for that postage paid card: On the way home, I stopped off at a
Tilcon-Gammino job site (I know the foreman), and picked up one of those new
tri-cut cinder blocks (approximate weight 50 lbs.) 50 square feet of
heavy brown wrapping paper and the "postage paid" card taped securely to the
front, and into the mailbox it went.
One problem though. Since I am shortly going out of the country, I had use
Barkely Rosser's return address in the upper left hand corner.
Sorry, Barkley.
Happy reading.
