Hello jc,
One qusetion; could all the members of the working class, world
wide, drive new cars every three years? If the answer is no, then
you have to face the fact that some members of the working class
- the working class being defined as those who depend on selling
their labour power - are going to have to lessen their current
rate of consumption. Either that or you are going to have to
redifine who belongs to the working class.
The reality that some workers do relatively well at the expense
of others, and that this occurs on a geographically significant
basis, is a problem for revolutionaries that needs exposing and
resolving. To simply say, as some do, that those who benefit are
not recognising their 'real' long term interests because of their
false consciouness, fails to engage with the power of immediate
and short term interests, which are experienced as being just as
'real'. It all too easily becomes a theoretical wishing away of
an all too real problem.
All the best Raymond Hickman
