People compete with ideas

Ideas reflect, more or less, the interacting forces of reality,
which form their own ecology.

Ideas therefore have a sort of ecology of their own, some positions
robust, some more tenuous.

Therefore to reflect reality there needs to be an ecology of
participants in discussion.

We seem to be progressing in that direction.
