Disregard if you wish, as this is simply a personal letter, though it
concerns Marxism. My apologies if this seems inappropriate.

Hello to Yoldas Zeynep Tufekcioglu from Wei En Lin,

Thank you for your letter in Turkish posted some weeks ago.

Ben Turkce konusabilirim, ama yazmak ve okumak daha zor.
Senin mektubu, Ben okuyabilirdi(sozluk ile), ama Size ingilizce
genelilkle yazmak istiyorum. Benim icin, daha kolay.

Size bir soru sormak istiyorum. Senin isim, Tufekcioglu, ne demek?
Bir Tufek yapmak kisinin oglugu mu? Ne guzel bir isim, devrimci icin!

I agree with the points you made about the EZLN. I have spent some time
with EZLN sympathizers in Yucatan, in Merida, the capital. They are not
nominally marxists, but, as you say, that in no way invalidates their
experience. IN Yucatan, the people are Mayan Indians, who speak Mayan
as their native tongue. I was suprised when I was there two years ago,
on the birthday of Emiliano Zapata. There were demonstrations in the
streets in support of the EZLN (ejercito zapatista para la liberacion
nacional). MOst of the speeches were in Spanish, but a few were actually
in the MAYAN language, something almost unheard of in public in Yucatan.
(This issue bears some similarity to the Kurdish question, as you no
doubt know).

Generally, I found the supporters of the EZLN were very perceptive about
US imperialism, and understood that the "mexico bailout" was to benefit
US companies and the Mexican upper crust.

Sincere regards,

Wei En Lin

The membership may not be marxist, but I thought that the "leadership" - a
word that has to be used carefully with the Zapatistas - was, if not
marxist, then heavily influenced by Marx, especially through Gramsci and
Althusser.
