Of course not. I'm UK journalist Simon Strong. I joined this list in the
summer of 1994 and have been waiting waiting, like the patient Fujimori
mole that I am, for the arrival of the super revolutionary "Quispe". Don't
tell anyone, though.

"Sharks" is actually pretty good for a bunch of Californians. It's "water"
related. Californians instinctively understand water is related to hockey
in some form...
David is from San Francisco, a bigtime hockey town. In 1968, the National
Hockey League expanded from 6 to 12 teams. One of those six new teams was
the "Oakland Seals." (Water related again. Californians intuitively
understand there is _something_, some co-relation... water... hockey...
hockey... water... something. The Anaheim Mighty Ducks is a part of that
intuitive tradition.)
Sadly, though, the Oakland Seals suffered from poor attendance. So the
owners tried to boost the unfortunate team with an exciting new name: the
"California Golden Seals."
Surely this would produce a winner! I mean... We aren't just talking about
chucking your _average_ seal onto a sheet of ice and thereby creating a
slug-like skid mark (hallmark of Californian hockey players).
These were average seals, these seals were golllllden...
Golllllden Seals.
(They soon folded.)
Ken.
P.S. Historians indicate that in 1966, Three Wise Men from Michigan,
Manitoba and Ontario, journeyed from afar to teach them the magic the
eager Californians came to call "make water go hard" -- and to bestow upon
them that Holiest of Holies, The Zamboni. The rest is hockey history.
